Game Design grad Davi Rodrigues Costa is riding the iPhone wave in his native Brazil. After graduating from VFS in February of this year - he was on the team who made the Flash game Sheep Happens, which we wrote about in January - he took the time he needed to find the right position and the right niche in the right place. That position? Executive Producer and Designer at Gol Mobile, a content developer based in Rio de Janeiro. Gol Mobile is the only Brazilian company licensed by Apple to develop and distribute products via the iTunes portal. We asked Davi about the job and tackling a platform like the iPhone.Could you explain what Gol Mobile does and what your role is there?Gol Mobile creates, develops, and distributes content to all Brazilian telecommunications companies and offers support media to 47 newspapers. It also develops mobile entertaining and educational games. As the Executive Producer and Designer, I have to be aware of the market opportunities, contact and attend to meetings with potential partners, as well as design concepts for products based on all that gathered information to be developed by our studio. What excites you about designing games for the iPhone? As a relatively new platform with so many new features, the iPhone offers developers so much room for creativity. The opportunity to develop games for a mobile platform, which is basically a console that is always in the user’s pocket gives it even more potential.
There are always going to be challenges to finding the job after school. Some people seem to get hired right away, some don’t. Now that you’ve landed this job, what advice would you give people who are following in your footsteps?Getting frustrated is part of it. I big part, actually. The important thing is to never get desperate or give up. The opportunity will come sooner or later, just try to always be as enthusiastic about games as you were the day you joined the VFS program. How, if at all, do you feel that Game Design at VFS helped or prepared you for this opportunity? The world is full of people who love or even are addicted to games and you don’t need to go to school for that. But although loving them is essential, understanding game development, theory and the industry is crucial to those who think of games as more than a hobby. I believe that kind of training, which I got from VFS, is what makes all the difference. Thanks, Davi!
